Introduction
Monaco may be the world's second-smallest sovereign state, but it is a place of sheer enchantment where luxury meets history. Nestled on the French Riviera, this tiny principality offers a wealth of experiences for the discerning traveler.
If you’re scheduled to attend the Monaco Yacht Show (MYS), you’ll find the networking opportunities an amazing chance to socialize with industry peers and friends.
But once the docks clear, you might be craving a quieter, more relaxed way to experience the area. Having attended MYS for several years, I’ve put together a few of my favorite low-key and surprisingly budget-friendly excursions in Monaco.
Explore the Opulent Monte Carlo Casino
Everyone knows the Monte Carlo Casino, but you don't need to drop thousands at the blackjack table to appreciate it. Go early in the day for the architectural tour instead. Inside, the place looks straight out of Casino Royale (opens in a new window), with gold leaf, sculpted ceilings, and massive crystal chandeliers everywhere you look.
Afterward, grab an espresso and walk out to the back terraces; the view looking out over the Mediterranean is easily one of the best free spots in the whole principality.
Discover the Rich History of the Prince's Palace
Monaco’s royal history runs deep, and the Prince’s Palace (opens in a new window) is where it all started. Built in the 13th century and still home to the Grimaldi family today, this iconic landmark offers a rare look into centuries of European heritage. For just €13, you can self-tour the State Apartments and see incredible Renaissance art, intricate tapestries, and the grand Throne Room firsthand.
Time your visit for the morning to catch the free Changing of the Guard ceremony right outside. Once you wrap up, head straight into Monaco-Ville (opens in a new window) (Le Rocher) to explore the quiet, pastel-lined alleys that make up the oldest part of the principality.
Marvel at the Oceanographic Museum
To continue in the spirit of a low-cost day out, you can upgrade your ticket to the palace and add entry to this museum too.
Monaco uses every inch of its small space, and this museum is no different. It’s perched dramatically on a cliff overlooking the sea. The Oceanographic Museum of Monaco (opens in a new window) is one of the world's most prestigious and beautiful marine science museums. Founded in 1910 by Prince Albert I, a passionate oceanographer, the museum is a treasure trove of marine life and oceanic artifacts.
The Oceanographic Museum is not just about what's inside; its location is also breathtaking. The panoramic terrace offers spectacular views of the Mediterranean, and the museum's gardens are a lovely place to relax and enjoy the Riviera's natural beauty.
Get a Guided Tour of the Formula One Circuit
For anyone who has ever watched the Monaco Grand Prix on television, standing on the actual tarmac is a bit surreal. I’d highly recommend booking a specialized F1 walking tour if you want to get the full story behind the circuit.
The F1 Guided Tour (opens in a new window) is certainly not the cheapest excursion in town (priced at $70 USD today), and it’s not by any means quiet, but honestly, when else in your life will you get to walk the entire track step-by-step with a guide who knows every corner, crash, and rivalry? Walking from the starting line down through the Fairmont Hairpin and along the superyacht-lined harbor gives you a whole new perspective on the principality.
And if this is your kind of thing, you might want to consider a guided tour in an actual Ferrari. (opens in a new window) I haven’t done it myself, but it’s on my bucket list.
Shop at the Metropole Shopping Monte-Carlo
Monaco and luxury shopping go hand in hand, and Metropole Shopping (opens in a new window)Monte-Carlo is the crown jewel.
Just steps from the main casino, it feels far more like a grand European hotel than a mall, complete with soaring ceilings and crystal chandeliers. While it’s paradise if you’re looking to splurge on designer fashion or high-end jewelry, it’s just as enjoyable as a zero-cost excursion.
You can easily spend an hour just strolling the halls, taking in the architecture, or finding a quiet perch to people-watch the glamorous crowd. It gives you that full Monaco vibe without forcing you to open your wallet.
Closing Thoughts
Monaco may be tiny, but it is brimming with experiences that showcase its unique blend of luxury, history, and natural beauty. One of my favorite things about Monaco is how different the experience can be depending on who you are when you arrive. Whether you’re yacht crew taking a rare day off after the chaos of the Monaco Yacht Show, an industry attendee (like me!) stealing a peaceful day trip after a busy event schedule, or a yacht owner keen to escape the crowds and explore beyond the harbor, the principality opens up in unexpected ways once you step away from the main tourist trail.
